How to Email College Golf Coaches

Wondering how to email college golf coaches during the recruiting process? Not sure what you should say in your email to coaches? This article will walk you through what you should do in your first email to coaches to help you make a great first impression!

The simple answer is to start with an intro email — a way of sharing your story and making it easy for the coach to learn about you and your ability to help their team.

What should you say in the intro email?

Some of you may have heard of the concept of an “elevator pitch”. The intro email is your elevator pitch — your simple, concise, sales pitch in which you introduce yourself with the goal of piquing the coach’s interest and opening the door for a much more in depth conversation. The intro email is NOT the time to tell your entire life story.

Coaches receive hundreds of emails. And sorting through all of those emails takes time. Long emails, no matter how great they are, can easily fall into the “too long, didn’t read” category. So your goal as a prospect is to provide coaches with your elevator pitch in an intro email, and then hope that the door opens for a much more in depth conversation as a result.

Focus on your data

Let the numbers speak for themselves. In your intro email, share your recent tournament results from the last year (and include ALL of your results — not just the good ones — in an easy to read format), as well as your GPA and scores from any SAT or ACT tests you have taken. Your intro email will be fairly data heavy, and that’s a good thing.  Data is the best way to demonstrate your ability to a coach.

Personalize your emails

Personalize your intro email beyond just changing the name of the coach and school. Do some research and tell each coach why you are interested in their school specifically. Include something about why you are uniquely interested in their school. This can take a bit of time and effort, but you’ll be surprised how much of an impact it can make!

Here are a few final steps to make sure all of your details and personalization are correct:

  • Address your email to “Dear Coach (last name) and Coach (last name),”
  • In the email, say that you are writing to express your interest in (School Name).
  • Make the subject of your email “(Your Full Name, HS Graduation Year)”.
  • Copy and paste the coaches’ email address last! This prevents you from sending the email by accident or before you have changed the name of the coach and school.

How to find coach email addresses

Sometimes it can be hard to know where to find contact information for coaches. Here’s what I recommend:

  • Go to a school’s athletic website, find the team page you are interested in, click on the roster or coach info, and you should be able to find email addresses for all of the coaches.
  • If the email addresses aren’t listed here, try looking for a general athletic directory and searching for your sport.
  • Plan to write one basic email, and then you will personalize this one email so that it is slightly unique for each school.
  • Again, DO NOT cc all coaches on the same email — coaches will assume you are not genuinely interested in their school/program.
